An Israeli military inquiry has disclosed that the tragic deaths of 15 emergency responders in Gaza on March 23 were the result of what was termed an “operational misunderstanding” and violations of protocol. The incident occurred in Rafah’s Tal al-Sultan locality when troops misinterpreted a perceived threat. As a consequence of the investigation, a battalion commander has been relieved of duty and a brigade commander has been reprimanded. The findings shed light on the circumstances surrounding the regrettable loss of lives during the military operation.
