In a recent development, the Indian government has announced new guidelines for online news portals and OTT platforms in India. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has mandated that digital news platforms and over-the-top (OTT) streaming services must adhere to the Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Digital Media. This move comes as part of the government’s efforts to regulate digital content and ensure transparency in the online media space. The guidelines require platforms to self-regulate their content and set up grievance redressal mechanisms for user complaints. OTT platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney+ Hotstar will now have to classify their content into age-based categories and implement parental locks for content deemed unsuitable for minors. The guidelines also prohibit the streaming of content that disrespects the national emblem and flag, promotes terrorism, or contains explicit sexual content. Digital news platforms are required to follow the Press Council of India’s norms and ensure that their content is unbiased and factual. Failure to comply with the guidelines could result in penalties or even a ban on the platforms. The move has sparked a debate on censorship and freedom of speech in the digital realm, with some critics expressing concerns about government overreach. However, supporters argue that the guidelines are necessary to maintain accountability and protect consumers. Overall, the new regulations mark a significant step towards regulating digital media in India and ensuring a safer online environment for users.
