“India’s COVID-19 vaccine production to increase, aiming for 2.2 billion doses in 2021”

In a recent development, the Indian government has announced new guidelines for social media platforms and digital news outlets in the country. These guidelines are aimed at regulating the content on these platforms and ensuring transparency. According to the new rules, social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram will be required to appoint a Chief Compliance Officer, a Nodal Contact Person, and a Resident Grievance Officer who must be residents of India. In addition, these platforms will have to remove content within 36 hours of receiving a complaint. Moreover, digital news outlets will also need to comply with the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. These rules require digital news platforms to follow a code of ethics and norms while publishing or broadcasting news content. Failure to comply with these guidelines could result in penalties or even the blocking of the platform. The government’s move has received mixed reactions, with some applauding the efforts to regulate digital content and others expressing concerns about potential censorship. It remains to be seen how these new guidelines will be implemented and what impact they will have on the digital landscape in India.
