Helium and AT&T Partner to Expand WiFi Network Across US, Integrating Decentralized Nodes with Traditional Services

Helium, the telecommunications decentralized physical infrastructure network (DePIN) project, has forged a partnership with the US telecom giant AT&T to provide WiFi services to its users. As per an announcement on April 24 shared with Cointelegraph, AT&T customers can now access Helium’s community-built WiFi network, which boasts over 93,500 hotspots, predominantly situated in the United States. The Helium Network functions through individuals and businesses operating small cell towers as hotspots, receiving digital rewards for expanding the network’s coverage. The collaboration with AT&T marks a significant step towards merging centralized and decentralized networks, offering seamless WiFi authentication through AT&T’s Passpoint WiFi roaming service. Helium Mobile, the mobile network division of Helium, has already attracted over 800,000 daily users leveraging its network for connectivity. The company has also secured agreements with Telefónica’s Movistar in Mexico and is cooperating with other mobile network operators to enhance their coverage with Helium’s network. This partnership follows Helium Mobile’s introduction of a free phone plan in the US in February, emphasizing its commitment to expanding connectivity options. In recent regulatory news, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) settled a lawsuit with Helium developer Nova Labs, dismissing allegations of selling unregistered investment products after paying a $200,000 civil penalty. The resolution signifies a pivotal moment for Helium, reinforcing the legitimacy of its operations and network expansion efforts.
