In a significant development, the Indian government has announced new regulations for social media platforms and digital news outlets in the country. The new guidelines aim to bring more accountability and transparency to these platforms, with a particular focus on curbing misinformation and fake news. Under the new rules, social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp will be required to establish a grievance redressal mechanism to address user complaints in a timely manner. They will also need to appoint a chief compliance officer, a nodal contact person for 24×7 coordination with law enforcement agencies, and a resident grievance officer. Additionally, these platforms will have to disclose the origin of any message or post deemed to be misinformation or illegal within 72 hours of a government or legal order. The regulations also extend to digital news outlets, requiring them to adhere to the Press Council of India’s norms and the Cable Television Networks Regulation Act. These new rules mark a significant step towards regulating the digital space in India and holding social media platforms and digital news outlets accountable for the content shared on their platforms. The move comes amid growing concerns about the spread of fake news and misinformation online, which can have serious consequences for public safety and societal harmony. It is expected that these regulations will help create a safer and more transparent online environment for Indian users.
