Avraham Eisenberg has been sentenced to over four years in prison on child sexual abuse material charges, unrelated to his involvement in the 2022 exploit that drained around $100 million from the decentralized exchange Mango Markets. The sentencing took place on May 1 in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York, with Eisenberg receiving a 52-month prison term. The case was initiated in April 2024 following Eisenberg’s indictment in 2023 for the Mango Markets exploit. Initially set for July 2024, Eisenberg’s sentencing was postponed to allow for a consolidated proceeding that would encompass both the child pornography and fraud charges. However, as of May 1, the sentencing for the fraud conviction remains outstanding. The prosecution of Eisenberg serves as a warning to hackers and cyber exploiters targeting the crypto industry with malicious attacks on platforms and users. The Mango Markets incident occurred in October 2022 when the exchange fell victim to a price oracle manipulation, resulting in a $100 million loss of user funds and a 52% drop in the value of its native token, Mango (MNGO). Despite claiming that the exploit was carried out through legal means and negotiating a fund return settlement, Eisenberg was arrested in Puerto Rico in December 2022. Subsequently, he was found guilty of wire fraud, commodities fraud, and commodities manipulation in April 2024. His defense argued that the exploit was not a cybercrime but a legitimate trading strategy. Following the conviction, Eisenberg’s attorneys filed a motion for acquittal in September 2024, which faced strong opposition from US prosecutors who maintained that the conviction was supported by substantial evidence. This case highlights the increasing crackdown on cybercriminals within the crypto space and emphasizes the importance of security measures in safeguarding digital assets.
