Safeheron unveils open-source TEE framework to boost Web3 security in DeFi and crypto sectors, enhancing privacy.

Safeheron, a digital asset infrastructure provider based in Singapore, has introduced an open-source Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) framework, aimed at enhancing security and privacy for Web3 applications in sectors like decentralized finance (DeFi), payment services, and decentralized autonomous organizations. This TEE framework is the first of its kind built on the native Intel SGX SDK and developed using modern C++, a versatile object-oriented programming language commonly used in operating systems, game development, and high-performance computing. The decision to open-source the framework comes in response to industry concerns regarding closed and opaque systems, especially as security incidents continue to rise. Trusted Execution Environments create secure, isolated spaces within CPUs, known as “enclaves,” where programs can run while being shielded from external attacks, including those originating from within the hardware. Some sectors of Web3 utilizing TEEs include privacy-focused blockchains, oracles, DeFi, payment services, and exchanges, with companies like Oasis Network, Secret Network, and Phala Network already leveraging TEE technology. Safeheron’s TEE framework enables clients to create enclaves using cloud services, including public cloud services that support Intel SGX servers. Having served over 100 clients, including prominent names like MetaMask, Doo Group, and Amber Group, Safeheron has recently surpassed a cumulative transfer volume of $100 billion. In August 2022, the company raised $7 million in pre-Series A funding, which will be allocated towards research, development, and expanding the business team. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has proposed incorporating TEE technology into the Ethereum ecosystem to enhance user privacy, suggesting short-term solutions that would provide stronger assurances of data privacy. TEEs could also play a crucial role in protecting private wallet keys and safeguarding against vulnerabilities in systems like Succinct Non-Interactive Arguments of Knowledge (SNARKs). With the growing importance of TEEs in the crypto space, Safeheron’s open-source framework is poised to make significant contributions to Web3 security.
