FTX Executive’s Wife Claims Deception in Guilty Plea Deal, Seeks Dismissal: Court Filing Reveals Controversy

Michelle Bond, the wife of former FTX Digital Markets co-CEO Ryan Salame, is seeking the dismissal of federal campaign finance charges against her husband, alleging that US prosecutors misled him into accepting a guilty plea. In a filing on May 7 in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York, Bond’s lawyers reiterated the claims made by Salame in opposing his plea deal, which still resulted in his imprisonment. Bond argued that prosecutors used deception to secure a deal with Salame by promising not to charge her, a promise that was not officially documented in the plea agreement. The filing stated that there is a legitimate dispute regarding the promises made to induce Salame’s guilty plea, warranting a hearing with discovery. Bond was charged in August 2024 with various campaign finance-related charges stemming from her failed congressional campaign in 2022. Salame, who pleaded guilty to felony charges in 2023 and was sentenced to over seven years in prison, attempted to revoke his plea deal, claiming it included an agreement not to charge Bond. The recent filing requested the court to suppress any statements made by Bond following the alleged inducement in Salame’s deal. Bond hinted that her Republican affiliation may have contributed to the charges against her. The legal saga involving former FTX executives continues, with most individuals facing charges related to the misuse of the crypto exchange’s funds having their day in court. Former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried, who pled not guilty, was sentenced to 25 years in prison after a trial in 2023. Caroline Ellison, the former CEO of Alameda Research, was sentenced to two years in prison in 2024 as part of a plea deal. Nishad Singh and Gary Wang, former FTX executives, received sentences of time served in 2024. The fallout from the FTX scandal continues, with various individuals facing legal consequences related to their involvement with the defunct exchange.
