In August 2023, a 21-year-old Dalit woman in India reportedly fell victim to a rape incident involving an upper-caste individual. The woman and her family found themselves coerced into resolving the issue through a panchayat, where a settlement of Rs 2.5 lakh was reached. Subsequently, the woman’s marriage faced cancellation threats and the circulation of a compromising video, prompting the family to seek assistance from law enforcement. This led to the lodging of a First Information Report (FIR) against five men involved in the matter.
