The Indian government has recently announced new guidelines for social media platforms, digital news outlets, and OTT streaming services in the country. These guidelines aim to regulate digital content and make these platforms more accountable for the content shared on their platforms. Social media platforms will now have to appoint grievance officers to address user complaints within a defined timeline. They will also have to remove content within 36 hours of receiving a court order or government directive. Digital news outlets have been asked to follow the norms of the Press Council of India and the Programme Code under the Cable Television Networks Regulation Act. OTT streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney+ Hotstar will now have to classify their content into categories like U (Universal), U/A 7+, U/A 13+, U/A 16+, and A (Adult). These platforms will also need to implement parental locks for content classified as U/A 13+ or higher. The guidelines have been introduced to address issues like fake news, misinformation, and inappropriate content available on digital platforms. This move is seen as an attempt to bring in more transparency and accountability in the digital space. It is important for these platforms to adhere to the new guidelines to continue operating in India without facing any penalties or bans.
