In a significant development in the education sector in India, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a new assessment framework for classes 6 to 10. The new framework aims to shift the focus from rote learning to competency-based learning, emphasizing critical thinking and analytical skills. This move is in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which advocates for a more holistic and skill-based approach to education. Under the new assessment system, students will be evaluated on a continuous basis throughout the year, with a focus on application-based questions and competency assessments. This is a departure from the traditional system of year-end examinations and memorization. The CBSE has also introduced the concept of “competency-based questions” in the question papers to assess students’ understanding and application of concepts. This change is expected to promote a deeper understanding of subjects and discourage rote learning. The new framework is set to be implemented from the academic year 2023-24 onwards, giving schools and teachers time to adapt to the new system. The CBSE’s initiative is a step towards aligning Indian education with global standards and preparing students for the challenges of the 21st century. It is hoped that this shift will foster a more innovative and creative approach to learning, equipping students with the skills they need to succeed in an increasingly competitive world.
