Nepal issues Budhi Gandaki flood warning as Gorkha homes are swept away

Nepal warns communities along the Budhi Gandaki to seek higher ground as early reports describe homes swept away in Gorkha district.

Warning extends downstream

Nepal issued a flood alert for the Budhi Gandaki River on Sunday, October 11, asking riverside communities to move to higher ground. The Times of India reported that the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority warned of a large surge arriving from an upstream rural municipality. Its advisory covered the river corridor as far as Trishuli Dobhan and asked people to avoid approaching the water until the flood had passed. The Indian Express separately reported the warning and damage to settlements in Gorkha district. The authority’s message focused on keeping residents away from the river while the surge moved downstream.

Early reports describe homes lost

The Indian Express cited Gorkha Chief District Officer Dharmendra Kumar Mishra as saying that five to seven homes at Jagat had been washed away. That was an early local estimate rather than a completed assessment of damage across the affected area. The report said no deaths or injuries had been reported at that stage. Officials described an upstream landslide and a possible temporary blockage, but the precise sequence behind the surge remained under investigation.

Residents move as officials assess the river

Residents of Chumling and Lokpa had moved out as the river rose, according to The Indian Express. It also reported that people in downstream settlements were leaving their homes. Police in Arughat used loudspeakers to direct residents towards safer locations, while flood officials sent text alerts. Mishra said preparations were being made for an army helicopter to survey the situation. The warnings, evacuation reports and initial house-loss figures describe an evolving emergency; they do not establish a final casualty or damage count.
