Prakash Rajpurohit appointed Deputy Election Commissioner in reshuffle

New appointment at the Election Commission

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet appointed Prakash Rajpurohit as Deputy Election Commissioner on Saturday, October 10, as part of a wider round of senior administrative appointments. The Indian Express reported that the 2010-batch Rajasthan-cadre IAS officer fills the vacancy left by Sanjay Kumar’s return to his parent cadre in August.

Rajpurohit had been serving as Joint Secretary in the Department of Defence Production under the Ministry of Defence since May, according to the newspaper. His appointment to the Election Commission runs until April 2030. Kumar had held the Deputy Election Commissioner post from August 2024 and was responsible for the electoral-roll and information-technology divisions before his repatriation and posting in the Delhi government.

Tenure and the wider reshuffle

PTI, reporting in Business Standard, specified April 8, 2030, as the end of Rajpurohit’s tenure. It said the Cabinet committee approved appointments of 27 civil servants to posts at joint-secretary level or equivalent.

The reshuffle also places Vivek Khare, a 1996-batch Indian Telecom Service officer, as Joint Secretary at the National Testing Agency. Ravi Shankar, Chittaranjan Dash, P Manoj Kumar and Abhishek Bhagotia were appointed joint secretaries in the Ministry of Home Affairs, according to the same Personnel Ministry order cited by PTI.

In health administration, Mohammed Y Safirulla K and Ritu Sharma were appointed joint secretaries in the Department of Health and Family Welfare. Varnali Deka, a 2009-batch IAS officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, was named Joint Secretary at the National Health Authority. These appointments form part of the same Saturday reshuffle that brought Rajpurohit to the Election Commission.
