The Goa government is embarking on its first experimentation with open and semi-open prisons at Colvale central jail to reform the prison system and aid in inmate rehabilitation. This move, inspired by the Supreme Court’s recommendations, is aimed at enhancing inmate reformation, alleviating overcrowding, and facilitating the smooth reintegration of inmates into society. Open prisons enable qualifying inmates to engage in work or educational activities outside the prison premises. This progressive initiative is a step towards modernizing the prison system in the state of Goa.
