“Crypto Address Poisoning Scams Drain $1.2M in March, Highlighting Rise of Phishing Attacks”

Address poisoning scams have drained over $1.2 million from victims in India in March, highlighting the concerning trend of cryptocurrency phishing attacks. These scams involve tricking individuals into sending digital assets to fraudulent addresses owned by scammers. According to Cyvers, a security firm, pig butchering schemes on Ethereum have contributed to the loss of funds. The industry has already lost over $1.8 million to such scams since the beginning of the year. Cyvers’ co-founder and CEO, Deddy Lavid, pointed out that the sophistication of attackers and the lack of pre-transaction security measures are key factors driving these scams. Lavid emphasized that many wallets and platforms lack real-time pre-transaction screening to detect suspicious addresses. Despite the surge in phishing attacks, there is hope for victims as seen in a case where an attacker returned $71 million to an investor after receiving attention from blockchain investigators. With phishing scams becoming a growing threat to the crypto industry, it is crucial for users to remain vigilant and implement security measures to protect their assets. Pig butchering schemes, which involve complex manipulation tactics, have cost the industry billions of dollars. In 2024, these schemes on the Ethereum network resulted in losses of over $5.5 billion across 200,000 identified cases. It’s alarming that 75% of victims lost more than half of their net worth to these scams, with males aged 30 to 49 being the most affected demographic. Phishing scams were the top crypto security threat in 2024, netting attackers over $1 billion across 296 incidents. This underscores the importance of awareness and vigilance in the crypto space to prevent falling victim to such attacks.
