The Goa government is in the process of setting up its first experimentation with open and semi-open prisons at Colvale central jail. This move is aimed at reforming the prison system and aiding in the rehabilitation of inmates. Open prisons offer eligible prisoners the opportunity to work or pursue education outside the prison premises. The decision to establish these open prisons comes after the Supreme Court’s push for such initiatives to enhance prisoner reformation, alleviate overcrowding in prisons, and equip inmates with skills for their eventual reintegration into society.
