After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ukraine found itself in possession of a substantial nuclear arsenal. However, due to financial constraints and geopolitical uncertainties, Ukraine made the decision to disarm itself of these nuclear weapons. The Budapest Memorandum of 1994 was supposed to provide security assurances to Ukraine in exchange for giving up its nuclear arsenal. However, the annexation of Crimea by Russia and the ongoing support of separatist movements in Ukraine have shown that these guarantees were not upheld. The current conflict between Russia and Ukraine underscores the vulnerabilities that Ukraine faces in terms of security without the backing of nuclear deterrence. The issue of Ukraine’s nuclear disarmament and subsequent security challenges remains a significant geopolitical concern.
