After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Ukraine found itself in possession of a substantial nuclear arsenal. However, faced with financial constraints and geopolitical uncertainties, Ukraine chose to disarm, relinquishing its nuclear weapons. The decision was influenced by the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, in which Ukraine received security assurances in exchange for giving up its nuclear capabilities. Unfortunately, the agreement failed to protect Ukraine’s territorial integrity when Russia annexed Crimea and provided support to separatist movements in the country. The current conflict between Russia and Ukraine underscores the challenges Ukraine faces in terms of security without the backing of nuclear deterrence. The vulnerability of Ukrainian security is laid bare in the ongoing tensions with Russia, making it imperative for Ukraine to explore alternative security measures to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of external threats.
