After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Ukraine found itself in possession of a substantial nuclear arsenal. However, due to financial constraints and geopolitical considerations, Ukraine made the decision to surrender these nuclear weapons. This move was facilitated by the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, which provided Ukraine with security assurances. Unfortunately, the annexation of Crimea by Russia and the ongoing support for separatist movements in Ukraine have exposed the inadequacy of these security guarantees. The current conflict between Russia and Ukraine underscores the vulnerabilities faced by Ukraine in the absence of nuclear deterrence.
