The Indian government recently announced new guidelines for social media platforms and digital news outlets in the country. These guidelines are aimed at regulating the content on these platforms to ensure transparency and accountability. Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp will now have to appoint a Chief Compliance Officer, a Nodal Contact Person, and a Resident Grievance Officer, all of whom must be residents of India. These officers will be responsible for addressing user complaints, ensuring compliance with the new rules, and coordinating with law enforcement agencies when required. The guidelines also require social media platforms to remove content within 36 hours of receiving a legal order and to assist in investigations when needed. For digital news outlets, the government has mandated that they adhere to the journalistic standards set by the Press Council of India and the News Broadcasters Association. The new rules come amid growing concerns about the spread of fake news and misinformation on social media platforms, as well as the need to hold digital news outlets accountable for their content. By implementing these guidelines, the Indian government aims to create a safer and more transparent online environment for its citizens.
