Ukraine’s Nuclear Past: From Stockpile to Surrender, Vulnerabilities Exposed in Russia Conflict.

After the disintegration of the Soviet Union, Ukraine found itself in possession of a substantial nuclear arsenal. However, due to financial constraints and geopolitical concerns, Ukraine made the decision to disarm itself of these nuclear weapons. The Budapest Memorandum of 1994 was supposed to provide security assurances to Ukraine, but these guarantees were called into question when Russia annexed Crimea and provided backing to separatist movements within Ukraine. The current conflict between Russia and Ukraine underscores the vulnerabilities that Ukraine faces in terms of security without the deterrent of nuclear weapons. The situation raises concerns about the reliability of international agreements and the ability of Ukraine to defend itself against external threats. The need for a robust security strategy and support from the international community is now more pressing than ever for Ukraine.
