The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has taken strict action against fourteen tolling agencies for engaging in irregular activities related to highway-user fee collection. These agencies have been banned for a period of two years, with the NHAI also forfeiting their performance securities, totaling over Rs 100 crore. In a bid to crack down on toll fraud and ensure precise transactions, the NHAI is set to introduce AI-powered audit cameras and a variable Unified Payments Interface (UPI) payment system. These measures aim to enhance transparency and accountability in toll collection processes across the country’s highways. The move comes after the NHAI found irregularities in 12.5% of cases, leading to refunds being issued for incorrect deductions. By leveraging advanced technologies and stringent penalties, the NHAI is committed to promoting integrity and efficiency in the toll collection system. This proactive approach underscores the NHAI’s dedication to upholding the highest standards of governance and service delivery in India’s infrastructure sector.
