In a recent development, the Indian government has announced new guidelines for social media platforms and OTT streaming services in the country. The move comes as part of efforts to regulate digital content and curb misinformation. Under the new rules, social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram will be required to establish a grievance redressal mechanism for resolving user complaints. They will also need to appoint a chief compliance officer, a nodal contact person for 24×7 coordination with law enforcement agencies, and a resident grievance officer. Additionally, OTT streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney+ Hotstar will now be required to classify their content into different age-based categories like U (Universal), U/A 7+, U/A 13+, U/A 16+, and A (Adult). Moreover, they will need to implement parental controls for content classified as U/A 13+ or higher. The new guidelines are aimed at promoting a safer and more responsible digital ecosystem in India. It is important for social media platforms and OTT streaming services to comply with these regulations to avoid facing any penalties or legal action. The government has given these platforms three months to adhere to the new rules. The move has been welcomed by many as a step towards ensuring a more transparent and secure online environment for Indian users.
