BITS Pilani Goa campus has initiated a study to assess the impact of microplastics on coral reefs in India. The research aims to understand how microplastics, which are tiny pieces of plastic less than 5mm in size, are affecting the marine ecosystem, particularly coral reefs. The study will focus on identifying the sources of microplastics, their distribution in coastal waters, and their interaction with coral reefs. Coral reefs are vital marine ecosystems that support a diverse range of marine life and play a crucial role in maintaining the health of the oceans. The research team from BITS Pilani Goa will collect water and sediment samples from different sites along the Goan coast to analyze the presence of microplastics. This study is significant as microplastics pose a serious threat to marine biodiversity and can have detrimental effects on coral reefs, which are already vulnerable due to climate change and other human activities.
