The Indian government has recently announced new guidelines for social media platforms and OTT (Over-The-Top) streaming services in the country. The Information and Broadcasting Ministry stated that social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram will now have to disclose the origin of any “mischievous” tweet or post. These platforms will also have to remove objectionable content within 36 hours of receiving a complaint. Additionally, the government has introduced a three-tier grievance redressal mechanism for OTT platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney+ Hotstar. The guidelines also require these platforms to classify content into five age-based categories. This move comes after the Indian government faced criticism for not regulating digital content and social media effectively. The new rules aim to provide a level playing field for all media, be it traditional or digital. The government believes that these guidelines will empower users and address concerns regarding fake news, misinformation, and inappropriate content circulating on these platforms. These regulations have sparked a debate on freedom of speech and censorship in India. While some support the government’s efforts to regulate digital media, others argue that it might lead to censorship and limit freedom of expression. Overall, these new guidelines mark a significant step towards regulating the digital media landscape in India and ensuring accountability among social media platforms and OTT services.
