Ukraine’s Decision to Give Up Nuclear Weapons Haunts It Amid Russia Conflict: A Lesson in Security Vulnerabilities

After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Ukraine found itself in possession of a substantial nuclear arsenal. However, due to financial constraints and geopolitical concerns, Ukraine made the decision to disarm itself of these nuclear weapons. The Budapest Memorandum of 1994 provided assurances of security to Ukraine in exchange for giving up its nuclear arsenal. Unfortunately, these security guarantees were called into question when Russia annexed Crimea and backed separatist movements in Ukraine. The current conflict between Russia and Ukraine underscores the challenges that Ukraine faces in terms of security without the protection of a nuclear deterrent. The vulnerability of Ukrainian security in the face of Russian aggression is a pressing issue that continues to be a cause for concern.
