After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Ukraine found itself in possession of a substantial nuclear arsenal. However, due to financial constraints and geopolitical concerns, Ukraine made the decision to disarm itself of these nuclear weapons. This move was reinforced by the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, which provided Ukraine with security assurances in exchange for giving up its nuclear stockpile. Unfortunately, recent events have shown that these guarantees were not upheld when Russia annexed Crimea and backed separatist movements in Ukraine. The current conflict between Russia and Ukraine underscores the challenges Ukraine faces in terms of security without the deterrent of nuclear weapons. The vulnerability of Ukraine’s security situation has been brought to the forefront, emphasizing the importance of reliable security agreements and the need for Ukraine to strengthen its defenses in the face of ongoing threats.
