In a recent development, the Indian government has announced new guidelines for social media platforms, digital news outlets, and Over-the-Top (OTT) platforms. The new rules require these platforms to appoint grievance officers based in India to address user complaints. Additionally, social media platforms with over 50 lakh users are now required to publish monthly compliance reports to disclose the details of complaints received and action taken. The guidelines also mandate platforms to remove content within 36 hours of receiving a complaint related to nudity, pornography, and impersonation. For digital news outlets, the rules require them to follow the journalistic conduct code and provide information about their fact-checking mechanisms. OTT platforms are also directed to classify content based on age appropriateness and set up a grievance redressal mechanism. These guidelines aim to regulate digital content and hold platforms accountable for the content shared on their platforms. The move comes amid concerns about fake news, misinformation, and harmful content circulating on social media and digital platforms. The government believes that these guidelines will help create a safer online environment for users and curb the spread of harmful content. It is essential for platforms to comply with these new rules to avoid facing penalties or being banned in India.
