Canary Capital Seeks Approval for Staked TRX ETF in Latest Altcoin ETF Filing Surge.

United States-based asset manager Canary Capital has filed to list an exchange-traded fund (ETF) holding the Tron blockchain network’s native token, TRX, as per regulatory filings. The fund plans to hold spot TRX and stake a portion of the tokens for added yield, according to the filing. TRX has a market capitalization of over $22 billion, and staking TRX generates an annualized yield of approximately 4.5%. This filing is part of a trend in submitting applications for ETFs holding alternative cryptocurrencies, or “altcoins.” Canary’s proposed fund stands out by seeking permission to stake its crypto holdings in its initial application, unlike other ETFs. Tron is a proof-of-stake blockchain network founded by Justin Sun. In March 2023, the SEC sued Sun for allegedly fraudulently inflating the prices of Tron and BitTorrent’s BTT token. The SEC and Sun have requested to pause the case for settlement talks. Canary has filed for multiple proposed US crypto ETFs since 2024, including funds holding Litecoin, XRP, Hedera, Axelar, Pengu, and Sui. While there is interest in ETFs holding alternative cryptocurrencies, some industry analysts believe they may not attract traditional investors. The rise in ETF filings for cryptocurrencies signals a growing interest in digital assets within the investment community.
