Elon Musk-Linked Scammers Target CZ with Fake Grok Coins Amid Rising Wave of Fraudulent Tokens

Scammers are taking advantage of the popularity of Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok, with fake tokens surfacing as part of potential phishing attacks. A wallet associated with former Binance CEO Changpeng “CZ” Zhao received 90 million fake Grok (GROK) tokens on April 21, as reported by blockchain security firm PeckShield. These tokens are deemed a likely scam since the deployer distributed them to multiple addresses via multisend. The Grok AI chatbot on the X platform has no official cryptocurrency and no plans to release one. In 2023, scammers first introduced fake Grok-related tokens, resulting in a significant drop after the deployer sold a portion of the total supply. Scammers frequently exploit the credibility of social media platforms, prominent brands, or celebrities like Elon Musk to build trust with victims. Meta was the most imitated brand in phishing reports in 2024, as per a report by Mailsuite. Coinbase was the most impersonated brand in the crypto industry, while Meta faced over 25 times more scams than the exchange. Recent reports indicate a resurgence in Elon Musk-related scams and fake tokens as scammers target investor assets. Phishing scams, such as address poisoning, involve deceiving victims into sending assets to fraudulent wallet addresses. Such scams cost the crypto industry over $1 billion across 296 incidents in 2024, highlighting them as a significant threat, according to blockchain security firm CertiK.
