Union Minister Kiren Rijiju recently defended the Waqf Act in India, emphasizing its two main objectives. Rijiju explained that the Act aims to benefit poor Muslims by preventing the misuse of Waqf properties, which are abundant in the country. He referenced previous committee reports from the Congress era that recommended efficient and transparent management of Waqf properties. Despite Rijiju’s support, opposition leaders such as Asaduddin Owaisi have criticized the Act. Additionally, the Supreme Court has temporarily halted certain provisions of the Act pending further review. The Act’s goal is to ensure that the land designated for Waqf purposes is utilized effectively for the welfare of the Muslim community while preventing any mismanagement or misuse of these valuable assets.
