The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) recently recovered $2.7 million worth of Bitcoin mining machines that were allegedly stolen in an airport heist. The LAPD disclosed on April 22 that detectives from its Cargo Theft Unit, in collaboration with the city’s Port Police, Union Pacific Police, and Airport Police, apprehended Oscar David Borrero-Manchola and Yonaiker Rafael Martinez-Ramos in connection with the thefts. These individuals were described as “prominent members” of a South American crime ring involved in stealing and selling goods in Los Angeles. The investigation led to the discovery of stolen goods, including Bitcoin (BTC) mining rigs, valued at $4 million. The stolen goods were recovered from storage unit facilities in the San Fernando Valley. Additionally, over $1.2 million in other allegedly stolen items such as tequila, clothing, shoes, speakers, coffee, body wash, and pet food were seized. The suspects were booked at Van Nuys Jail, with Borrero-Manchola charged with receiving stolen property and subsequently released, while Martinez-Ramos was arrested on a no-bail warrant. The LAPD stated that the investigation is ongoing, and more arrests could follow. US law enforcement has previously recovered stolen crypto mining rigs, with a similar incident in July resulting in the seizure of rigs worth $579,000. Notably, one of the largest thefts of Bitcoin mining rigs occurred in Iceland in late 2017 and early 2018, where over 600 machines were stolen and later seized in China. This recent recovery of stolen Bitcoin mining machines in Los Angeles highlights the ongoing challenges of theft in the cryptocurrency mining industry.
