“Voluntary groups prevent 1.2 lakh child marriages in India, halt 1,351 in 2024-25 across 416 districts”

A consortium of non-governmental organizations has recently announced substantial progress in the fight against child marriage in India. According to their latest report, during the 2024-25 period, a total of 1,351 instances of child marriages were successfully prevented, while over 1.2 lakh potential cases were averted due to a combination of legal actions and community-based interventions spanning 416 districts. Notably, the states of West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Bihar emerged as the top three regions with the highest number of First Information Reports (FIRs) filed in cases where interventions failed to halt the marriages from taking place. These findings highlight the ongoing efforts and effectiveness of collaborative initiatives aimed at curbing the prevalence of child marriage in the country. The success in preventing and stopping these unlawful unions underscores the importance of continued vigilance and targeted interventions to protect the rights and well-being of children in India.
