“Voluntary groups prevent 1,351 child marriages in India, halt 1.2 lakh with legal and community efforts”

A consortium of non-governmental organizations has made noteworthy progress in curbing the issue of child marriage in India. According to recent data from 2024-25, more than 1,351 instances of child marriages were successfully prevented, with over 1.2 lakh marriages averted through a combination of legal measures and community outreach efforts spanning across 416 districts in the country. The states of West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Bihar emerged as the top regions with the highest number of First Information Reports (FIRs) filed in cases where interventions to stop the marriages were unsuccessful. This collaborative approach between various voluntary organizations underscores a concerted effort to tackle the deep-rooted problem of child marriage prevalent in many parts of India. The significant impact of these initiatives is a testament to the effectiveness of combining legal action with community-based interventions to protect the rights and well-being of children.
