“Voluntary organizations in India prevent over 1.2 lakh child marriages in 2024-25, West Bengal and Bihar top FIRs”

A consortium of non-governmental organizations has made substantial progress in addressing the issue of child marriage in India. According to recent data, a total of 1,351 instances of child marriages were successfully prevented during the 2024-25 period, with an additional 1.2 lakh potential marriages averted through a combination of legal actions and community outreach initiatives in 416 districts nationwide. Notably, the states of West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Bihar witnessed the highest number of First Information Reports (FIRs) filed in cases where interventions failed to prevent the marriages from taking place. These efforts reflect a concerted push to enforce existing laws and promote awareness about the harmful impact of child marriage on young individuals, particularly girls. The collaborative approach taken by these organizations underscores the importance of multi-sectoral partnerships in tackling deep-rooted social issues such as child marriage. By combining legal measures with community engagement strategies, stakeholders aim to create a more protective environment for vulnerable children and uphold their fundamental rights. As these initiatives continue to yield positive results, it is hoped that the momentum gained in preventing child marriages will pave the way for lasting change and improved outcomes for children across the country.
