In a recent development, the Indian government has announced new guidelines for the regulation of social media platforms and digital news outlets in the country. The Information and Broadcasting Ministry has introduced the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021, which aim to bring more accountability and transparency to online platforms. These rules require social media companies like Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp to establish a grievance redressal mechanism to address user complaints in a timely manner. The guidelines also mandate the appointment of a Chief Compliance Officer, a Nodal Contact Person, and a Resident Grievance Officer by social media platforms with more than 50 lakh users. Additionally, digital news outlets are required to follow a code of ethics and norms, including adherence to the Press Council of India’s norms and guidelines. The new regulations come in the wake of growing concerns about fake news, misinformation, and the spread of harmful content online. The government’s move has sparked a debate about the balance between freedom of speech and the need for regulation in the digital space. It remains to be seen how these guidelines will be implemented and what impact they will have on social media platforms and digital news outlets operating in India.
