India lifts 171 million from extreme poverty, but challenges persist: World Bank’s report

According to the latest report from the World Bank, India has made remarkable strides in reducing extreme poverty, lifting 171 million people out of poverty between 2011-12 and 2022-23, bringing the poverty rate down to 2.3%. The report highlights that a total of 378 million people were lifted out of poverty when using a poverty line of $3.65 per day. Despite this significant progress, India still faces challenges such as high youth unemployment and gender disparities in employment, even as overall employment rates increase. The country’s efforts to tackle poverty have shown positive results, but there is still work to be done to ensure sustainable and inclusive growth.
