According to a recent report by the World Bank, India has made remarkable strides in reducing extreme poverty, with 171 million people lifted out of poverty between 2011-12 and 2022-23, bringing the poverty rate down to 2.3%. Using a poverty line of $3.65 per day, the number of individuals lifted out of poverty increases to 378 million. This progress is commendable, but there are still challenges that need to be addressed. One such challenge is the issue of youth unemployment, which continues to be a concern despite the overall rise in employment rates. Additionally, gender disparities in employment remain a pressing issue that needs to be tackled to ensure inclusive growth and development in the country. India’s efforts to alleviate poverty have shown positive results, but there is a need for continued focus and policies to sustain and further improve these outcomes for the betterment of all its citizens.
