India lifts 171 million out of poverty, but challenges remain: World Bank. Youth unemployment and gender disparities persist.

India has made remarkable strides in poverty alleviation, as per the latest report by the World Bank. Between 2011-12 and 2022-23, the country successfully lifted a staggering 171 million individuals out of extreme poverty, bringing down the poverty rate to 2.3%. By using a poverty line of $3.65 per day, the number of individuals lifted out of poverty increases to 378 million. Despite these impressive numbers, India still faces challenges such as youth unemployment and gender disparities in employment, even though overall employment rates are on the rise. The efforts made so far are commendable, but there is still work to be done to ensure sustainable and inclusive growth for all segments of the population.
