In a significant development, the Indian government has announced new regulations for social media and streaming platforms in the country. The new rules, titled the Information Technology (Guidelines for Intermediaries and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021, aim to regulate digital content and make social media platforms more accountable. Under these regulations, social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram will have to remove contentious content within 36 hours of receiving a legal order. Streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video will also need to classify their content into five categories based on age suitability. Additionally, the rules require these platforms to appoint a grievance officer to address user complaints. These regulations come in the wake of growing concerns about the spread of fake news and misinformation on social media platforms. The government believes that these guidelines will help curb the dissemination of harmful content and ensure a safer online environment for Indian users. The move has received mixed reactions, with some praising the government’s efforts to regulate digital media, while others are concerned about the implications for freedom of speech. It remains to be seen how these new regulations will impact the digital landscape in India and whether they will achieve their intended goals.
