India lifts 171 million out of extreme poverty, but challenges persist: World Bank Report

A recent report by the World Bank has highlighted India’s remarkable achievement in lifting 171 million people out of extreme poverty between 2011-12 and 2022-23, bringing down the poverty rate to 2.3%. The report also noted that a total of 378 million individuals were uplifted from poverty when a poverty line of $3.65 per day was considered. This substantial progress underscores the effectiveness of various poverty alleviation programs and initiatives undertaken by the Indian government. However, despite these advancements, the country still faces challenges such as youth unemployment and gender disparities in employment. It is crucial for policymakers to address these issues to ensure inclusive growth and sustainable development. With rising employment rates, there is a need to focus on creating more opportunities for the youth and bridging the gender gap in the workforce. By implementing targeted interventions and policies, India can continue its journey towards eradicating poverty and promoting economic prosperity for all its citizens.
