India lifts 171 million out of extreme poverty, but challenges persist: World Bank report

India has made remarkable strides in reducing extreme poverty, according to the latest report by the World Bank. Between 2011-12 and 2022-23, the country lifted an impressive 171 million people out of extreme poverty, bringing the poverty rate down to 2.3%. The report highlights that when using a poverty line of $3.65 per day, a total of 378 million individuals were able to escape poverty during this period. Despite this progress, India still faces challenges such as high levels of youth unemployment and gender disparities in employment opportunities, even amidst increasing overall employment rates. The World Bank’s findings underscore the need for continued efforts to address these issues and ensure sustainable economic growth that benefits all segments of society.
