The Indian government has recently announced new guidelines for social media platforms and OTT streaming services in the country. The Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021 aim to regulate content and address issues such as fake news, misinformation, and online abuse. Under these rules, social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are required to appoint chief compliance officers, nodal contact persons, and resident grievance officers in India. They must also remove content within 36 hours of receiving a legal order. OTT platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are now required to classify content into categories such as U (universal), U/A 7+, U/A 13+, U/A 16+, and A (adult). These platforms must also implement parental controls and age verification mechanisms. The new rules have sparked a debate on freedom of speech and expression, with some critics arguing that they could be misused to suppress dissenting voices. However, the government maintains that the guidelines are necessary to ensure a safe and responsible online environment. The implementation of these rules marks a significant development in India’s digital landscape and is expected to have far-reaching implications for social media and OTT platforms operating in the country.
