RBI’s New ATM Transaction Rules Effective May 1, 2025: Changes to Free Limits and Charges Announced

Come May 1, 2025, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will implement a new ATM transaction framework that will bring alterations to free limits and charges for customers across the country. Under the revised guidelines, customers in metro areas will be entitled to three free ATM transactions per month, while those in non-metro areas will have a limit of five free transactions. Any transactions exceeding these limits will incur a charge of Rs 23 per transaction. In anticipation of these changes, banks such as HDFC and PNB have started informing their customers about the updated charges. The objective behind these modifications is to encourage the adoption of digital banking services and streamline ATM usage. This move is in line with the RBI’s efforts to promote cashless transactions and enhance the overall efficiency of the banking system in India.
