Supreme Court issues notice to Centre on regulating explicit content on OTT platforms and social media.

The Supreme Court of India recently took up a plea regarding the regulation of sexually explicit content on Over-the-Top (OTT) platforms and social media in the country, directing a notice to the Central government. In its response, the court highlighted that the regulation of indecent content predominantly lies within the jurisdiction of the Executive and Legislative branches of the government. The government, in turn, apprised the court of the current regulatory framework in place and also discussed the possibility of further restrictions to tackle the proliferation of such content. This development underscores the ongoing debate surrounding online content regulation and the need for a comprehensive approach to address concerns around explicit material on digital platforms in India.
