“Ledger Scammers Target Crypto Wallet Owners with Seed Phrase Theft Letters, Caution Urged”

Scammers in India are employing a new tactic to target owners of Ledger crypto hardware wallets by sending fraudulent physical letters. These letters request the recipients to validate their private seed phrases under the guise of a security update. The letters, bearing the logo and address of Ledger, threaten restricted access to wallets and funds if the validation process is not completed. Seed phrases, essential for accessing crypto wallets, can be misused by scammers to transfer funds illicitly. Following reports of these scam letters, Ledger confirmed the fraudulent nature of the correspondence and warned users to be cautious of phishing attempts. It emphasized that Ledger would never ask for recovery phrases via calls or messages. It is speculated that scammers may be targeting customers whose data was leaked in a breach five years ago. In 2020, a hacker infiltrated Ledger’s database, exposing personal information of over 270,000 customers. Subsequently, some users claimed to have received tampered fake Ledger devices designed to install malware. Ledger users are advised to stay alert and avoid engaging with suspicious accounts.
