Crypto businessman’s father rescued from ransom in Paris raid; 5 arrested in €7M demand. Rise in crypto-related kidnappings.

The father of a crypto entrepreneur was rescued by police in Paris, France, after being held captive for ransom. According to reports from Le Monde and Le Parisien, the May 3 raid led to the arrest of five individuals who demanded 5 to 7 million euros for his release. The entrepreneur and his father co-owned a crypto marketing firm in Malta. This incident mirrors the kidnapping of Ledger co-founder David Balland in January 2025. Similar ransom attempts on crypto users have become more frequent globally. In November 2024, WonderFi CEO Dean Skurka paid a $1 million ransom after being kidnapped in Toronto. Six individuals were charged in Chicago in February 2025 for kidnapping a family and their nanny for a $15 million crypto ransom. Streamer Amouranth was also a victim of a home invasion in March 2025. Four suspects were arrested in Texas in connection to the incident. These incidents highlight the growing trend of targeting crypto users for extortion.
