Former Celsius CEO Granted Travel for Daughter’s Wedding Amid Sentencing, Potential Prison Time – Court Decision Pending

Former Celsius CEO, Alex Mashinsky, may be granted permission to travel for his daughter’s wedding despite the pending outcome of his May 8 sentencing hearing. In a filing on May 8 in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York, Judge John Koeltl approved Mashinsky’s application to travel from New York to Memphis, Tennessee, between May 26 and May 29 for the wedding. The approval was initially on the public docket but appeared to have been removed later. The upcoming May 8 hearing will determine whether Mashinsky will face prison time following a plea deal with prosecutors. Mashinsky had been prepared to go to trial in 2024 until his lawyers were unsuccessful in having his charges dismissed. In December, he pleaded guilty to commodities fraud and manipulating the price of Celsius’ native token, CEL. Mashinsky has been out on a $40 million bond since July 2023, with travel restrictions requiring court approval for trips outside certain areas, like the almost 900-mile distance between New York and Memphis. The sentencing hearing has prosecutors seeking a 20-year term while Mashinsky’s defense team is pushing for a one-year sentence. This case could set a precedent for cryptocurrency-related criminal cases under the current administration. The court district had previously overseen the sentencing of former FTX CEO, Sam “SBF” Bankman-Fried, who is currently serving a 25-year sentence. Mashinsky’s legal team submitted letters from family members, including his oldest daughter, advocating for leniency in sentencing, claiming he never intended to harm anyone. This case highlights the evolving landscape of cryptocurrency-related legal proceedings and the potential implications for those involved.
