US Man Sentenced to 30+ Years for Sending Crypto to ISIS

A Virginia man, Mohammed Azharuddin Chhipa, has been sentenced to 30 years and four months in prison for sending over $185,000 in crypto to the Islamic State terrorist organization. Chhipa, a 35-year-old US citizen born in India, collected and sent money to female ISIS members in Syria to help them escape prison camps and fund their activities. He raised funds through social media, receiving donations online and in person, which he converted into cryptocurrency and sent to Turkey for smuggling into Syria. In December, a federal jury convicted Chhipa on charges of providing support to a terrorist organization. Attorney General Pam Bondi emphasized that funding terrorism would result in prosecution and lengthy prison sentences. During the FBI investigation, Chhipa attempted to flee the US, but was apprehended after traveling through Mexico, Guatemala, and attempting to reach Egypt. The case highlights the US government’s commitment to combating terrorism financing through cryptocurrencies.
