US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that Russia would supply diesel to American and global markets following discussions with President Vladimir Putin. AFP, in a report published by NDTV, said Washington also eased restrictions through a temporary Treasury licence. The announcement comes ahead of the US midterm elections, with Trump seeking to address high energy costs.

AFP reported that Trump outlined an immediate release of more than 300,000 tons, followed by 500,000 tons in November and one million later. The licence permits Russian diesel to reach global markets through April 2027. These are announced supplies, rather than a report that all the fuel has already arrived.

Putin confirmed Russia’s willingness to supply oil and petroleum products, but his statement did not specify quantities. That leaves an important distinction between Trump’s stated volumes and the details publicly confirmed by Moscow.

According to the BBC, the arrangements for supplying the fuel and the eventual impact on prices remain unclear. Its report also said other Russian assets, including those in American banks, remain frozen. The temporary diesel measure therefore does not establish that all restrictions on Russia have been removed.

Sources: Trump announces deal for Russian diesel as Zelensky calls it a 'gift to Putin'

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky criticised the decision. The BBC also reported opposition from EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas, who argued that easing sanctions would give Moscow additional revenue for its war. These are the positions of the officials concerned.

Separately, AFP reported that US and Ukrainian negotiators met in Miami on Friday. US envoy Steve Witkoff said the discussions addressed possible de-escalation before winter, security guarantees and reconstruction. Officials from Britain, France and Germany attended, along with NATO and EU representatives. The talks provide a diplomatic backdrop to the fuel announcement; the reports do not establish a completed peace agreement.

Sources: Trump announces deal for Russian diesel as Zelensky calls it a 'gift to Putin' · In A U-Turn, Trump Signs Oil Deal With Putin, Zelensky Calls Move Unworthy

Prepared with AI assistance from the linked reporting.
